Which is better, WiFi or 5G?

WiFi and 5G are kind of networks which provide the facility of internet. Using internet you can do calls, text and all other stuff like surfing onto the websites, social media etc. So, before we go into the detail which is better a WiFi connection or 5G cellular network, we should understand what is exactly WiFi and 5G?

WiFi Network
WiFi Network

A WiFi connection is also called as WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network). LAN is a network which is provided via ISP (Internet Service Provider) through fiber or copper cable. The cables travel from the nearest hub/switch to the customer’s home. This wired connection could be converted to wireless via router or modem. The WiFi connection is used within the premises of the home. As the range varies from 50 square yards to 300 square yards depending upon the number of antennas and the range.

5G is the 5th generation of the mobile networks, which is mainly focused on the internet speeds and its benefits. The Gigabit speed, low latency, low jitter and the instant response due to the help of optical fiber technology and the new satellite technology in which the satellite are revolving around earth in low earth orbit. Hundreds of satellites connected together makes a network.

Which is better, a WiFi or 5G?

It is actually difficult to compare between both the WiFi and 5G. In India, both are available at very cheaper prices, when compared to different countries. WiFi comes at the starting price of ₹499 (excluding taxes) with unlimited data capped at 3333 GB with speeds around 40 – 50 Mbps at this price point. You can get the Gigabit speeds at very affordable prices starting from ₹2000 and ranging between ₹16000 based on the line type. Where as in 5G, you automatically get the higher speeds somewhat like 100 Mbps – 1500 Mbps, but with very limited amount of data like 40 GB – 300 GB only or unlimited with 4G via Vodafone Idea (as on 15-05-2023, till now we do not have any update from Vi India on 5G launch). The prices of these mobile internet postpaid plans start from ₹399 (excluding taxes) and goes upto ₹1500.

The real usage of 5G vs WiFi is almost same, like people use it mostly to stream 4K HDR videos or movies, play games etc. The latency of the cellular (5G) network and WiFi is also similar like, WiFi has very low latency of 2 ms, while 5G have a low latency of 10 ms, which when used in real life is not problematic. Now, the main thing to choose between 5G and WiFi is the data, how much is your data consumption? The more data consumption in home, then WiFi is a better option. If you are travelling mostly and you require a less amount of data then 5G is a very good option. In some cases you may require both, like when you a web designer and developer, YouTuber, Influencer, then you need much data at home also you require a high speed data on the go, therefore in this case you may require both and have to spend a lot money according to your pocket.
